Black Moon – print

The pre-dawn sky had this eerie quality – the light was strange, neither quite night nor day, washing everything in pale pinks and yellows. I shot through dense branches with the jacaranda's compound leaves creating intricate patterns, some catching hints of green and blue-grey. Working with watercolour, I kept the palette muted and ghostly, letting the black branches tangle and overlap. It's about absence rather than presence – what you sense rather than what you see clearly. Dawn in Sydney can have this particular haziness, especially in late summer when humidity hangs in the air. The feeling was more important than any specific light source.
